Medical alert systems help elderly and disabled individuals notify providers that there is an emergency and they need assistance. Knowing how medical alerts work and keeping them in proper working condition are imperative to safe and effective communication. Here are a few simple things people can do to make sure their medical alert is working properly.
Regular range tests are necessary to ensure a help signal reaches emergency operators. The console needs to be in an area where the pendant or bracelet can easily transmit to it. To test the system, first contact the medical alert company to notify them of the testing. Then, test the range from the rooms that are closest first then move further out. Don’t forget to test in all areas that will be blocked by a door or window such as bathrooms, outdoors, basements and garages. Closed doors and windows limit range. Let the company know when testing is complete.
Many companies automatically test medical alert consoles monthly, but weekly tests are also a good idea. Make sure to test all the buttons on the console, including the emergency button. If the company doesn’t provide automatic tests, or they only do tests once a month, a range test once a week will ensure that the medical alert system is always working correctly. If the company automatically does weekly tests, then check the console once a month.
Reduced range is a sign that the medical alert console or pendant has a low battery. Most companies automatically send a signal when batteries become low, or a light will show on the console. These batteries are not replaceable by individual users because they are waterproof, so contact the company immediately to have it replaced.
