- Maintain lighting fixtures in all areas of your house. Make sure bathrooms and stairs are well lit. Stairs should have light switches at both the top and bottom level.
- Clear out furniture, rugs, and electrical cords that stick out.
- Add handle bars to bathroom and bathtub.
- Replace floors with non-skid wax or waxed floors or other material that non-slip material.
- Use a walker or cane if one has been recommended to you by a doctor or physical therapist.
- Use a grabber (think extendable arm) to reach for things that are above the head instead of standing on a stool.
- Do not rush to answer the telephone. Instead, get a portable telephone and take it from room to room and have a functioning answering machine.
